Can you believe that 2009 is almost over? We still have lots of great programs for you before we ring in 2010, so stop by and check out our schedule! Here are some highlights:

Infant/Toddler Laptime and Preschool Storytime will both continue through the week of December 7.
Make an Advent Calendar with 6-8 year olds on December 1.
Read to a certified therapy dog with Kindly Canines on December5.
Learn about what life was like in Colonial times with Felicity in American Girls Club on December 8.
Bring the whole gang for our Family Movie Matinee on December 19. We will be watching "The Polar Express," rated G.

Children's Book Sale!

If you thought this past weekend's Wilson College Book Sale was great, just wait 'til you see what we have here in the Coyle Youth Room! Our annual Children's Book Sale begins today and will continue all week! For just $3, you can fill a plastic grocery bag with as many books as you can fit! We have an excellent selection, including board books, picture books, chapter books, nonfiction books, and a variety of videos. Come early, while the selection is at its best!

We have lots of great programs going on this month at Coyle! We started the new year off with a visit from the Kindly Canines! We had 12 kids show up to read to 7 dogs. Every child had the chance to read to several different dogs throughout the program. Did you miss your opportunity to read to the dogs? Don't fret! You'll have another chance next month! Kindly Canines will be returning on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 11:00 am. Be sure to sign up now to reserve your spot! (For ages 6-12)

Need something to occupy your time between now and then? Come see us on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 2:00 pm and play some Book Bingo!Miss Jessica will be your bingo caller as you play to win books as prizes! Be sure to bring the whole family...we have great prizes for all ages, from toddlers and preschoolers to teens and adults! Sign up today!

We are also starting our Winter session of Infant/Toddler Laptime and Preschool Storytime this month.

Infant/Toddler Laptime is for children ages 0-3, and will begin on Tuesday, Jan. 20. The program is on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 10:00 am. (Please pick one day to come, as the program is the same on both days.) There is no registration required, so just come on in!

Preschool Storytime is for children ages 3-5, and will begin on Thursday, Jan. 22. The program is on Thursday afternoons at 1:30 pm and Friday mornings at 10:00 am. Family Movie Matinee

Don't forget, this Saturday, Sept. 20 at 2:00 pm we will be having our Family Movie Matinee! This month we will be watching "Nim's Island," featuring Abigail Breslin, Jodie Foster, and Gerard Butler.

Nim Rusoe (Breslin) lives on a deserted island with her scientist father Jack (Butler) and her best friends: Selkie, a sea lion; Fred, a bearded dragon lizard; and Galileo, a plucky pelican. But when Jack goes missing at sea and the island is "invaded," Nim reaches out via e-mail to the adventurous author (Foster) of her favorite books, and together, each discovers what it takes to truly become the hero of your own life story. We will also have a Family program once a month for the whole family to enjoy together! As for those in our Reading Club, this is the last week to check in your books for points, and the store is open for you to redeem your points for prizes! Lots of treasures have already been snapped up, so be sure to get here soon to get the best selection! Haven't come to the library for our Summer Reading Program yet? It's not too late to swarm on in and see what the buzz is all about! We are currently on our third week of programs, but most of our programs still have four more weeks to go, so sign up now! There is also plenty of time left to join our Reading Club and earn points for those books you've been reading this summer. Plus, each time you check in your books for points, you'll get a different colored bee to add to our hive! We have lots of other exciting things to do, such as try your hand at our Mystery Bug Contest - each week there is a new pair of mystery bugs to identify - or come to one of our Family Movie Days, or to Family Book Bingo! With so much going on this summer, you're sure to find something to buzz about!

Summer Reading Kickoff!

Are you looking for a fun, exciting way to start your summer? Then join us on Thursday, June 12, at 10:30 am for a free concert at Chambersburg Area Middle School! Musician Jim Rule will provide a morning of music and fun. Featuring songs and stories in a variety of styles ranging from toe tapping tunes to inspirational anthems, his lyrical voice and warm sense of humor will make children and grown-ups alike smile and sing along. American Girl Author Coming to Hagerstown!

Attention all American Girl fans! Valerie Tripp, author of many American Girl books, will be at the Washington County Free Library in Hagerstown on March 16 at 2:00 pm! Tripp's talk will be interactive, encouraging girls to stand and curtsey, pretend that they are replastering adobe walls and try on some of the clothes they've read about in the American Girl books. Girls also will have the opportunity to have a photo taken with Tripp and for her to sign their books. To reserve a free ticket to Valerie Tripp's program, call Washington County Free Library at 301-739-3250, ext. 132, during library hours - Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. No more than four tickets will be given out to one group unless they belong to the same family. Seating at Tripp's presentation is limited to children. Parents may wait on the main level for their children until the program ends.

American Girls Club: Felicity

At American Girls Club on Saturday, December 15, we made Pomander Oranges (see below for directions) and watched the movie "Felicity: An American Girl Adventure". Don't miss next month's American Girls Club, where we will talk about Kit, a clever, resourceful girl facing the Great Depression with spirit and determination!

Pomander Oranges

You will need:

an orange
tape
whole cloves
ground cinnamon
ground nutmeg
ribbon

1) Starting at the top of the orange, put a length of tape around the bottom, then back up to the top.

Turn the orange halfway, and do the same thing. You will now have an "x" at the top and the bottom of your orange. (See pictures for examples.)

2) Going along the sides of the tape, push the cloves into the orange.

3) In the parts of the orange that have no tape or cloves, use an extra clove to poke holes all over.

4) Remove the tape from the orange. Mix the ground cinnamon and ground nutmeg in a bowl, then spread it over the holes, making sure to fill them with the mixture.

5) Place the orange in a cool, dry place for about a week. The orange will shrink and harden.

6) Wrap the ribbon around the orange where the tape once was. Form a loop at the top for hanging.

7) Hang your Pomander Orange in the kitchen, a closet, or on your Christmas tree. Its spicy scent can last for years!

American Girls Club: Kaya

At Tuesday's American Girls Club, we talked about Kaya, a Nez Perce girl who lived in 1764. We worked on several word puzzles, made dreamcatchers, and played the American Girl Treasures Game, a boardgame where each player goes on a quest to collect keepsakes from one historical character’s book series. Would you like to join the American Girls Club? Our next program is Saturday, December 15 at 10 am, and we will be talking about Felicity.
